"GOOFY" DREAM TEAM COMPLETES 2.5 MARATHONS FOR WELLWOOD |
"GOOFY" DREAM TEAM COMPLETES 2.5 MARATHONS FOR WELLWOOD
Hamilton, ON - Wellwood's Goofy Dream Team returned from Walt Disney World in Orlando last week, celebrating the completion of its two-and-a-half marathons (105 km) fundraiser.
Hot on the heels of their successful run at the 2004 New York City Marathon, the group hit the pavement again to raise funds for Wellwood, a Hamilton-based supportive cancer care centre.
They warmed up with the Chicago Marathon (42 km) last Thanksgiving weekend, and then followed up with the Disney "Goofy" Challenge, running a marathon AND a half-marathon (63 km), the first weekend in January.
"It's official....we're Goofy!" jokes Jane George, Wellwood executive director and a member of the team. "I guess you have to be in order to run that far. The secret was in running both races at a fairly slow pace to avoid injury."
Joining George in Chicago were Chuck and Susan van Baardwijk, as well as first-time marathoner Belinda Marazzato. Chuck was "goofy" enough to join in on the Disney challenge too. Although the actual races totalled 105 km, hundreds more were logged in training runs.
Wellwood offers supportive care programs to everyone affected by cancer, as well as navigational assistance to help clients access other services in the community. All are free of charge.
Money raised is going towards the capital campaign to build Wellwood's Juravinski House, a second community-based site at Chedoke, which George describes as "a place of hope, healing, laughter and light." The campaign is nearing its goal, and construction is expected to begin within the year.
Donations to honour the team's accomplishment are still gladly being accepted. Contact Wellwood at 905-389-5884,

"I do these marathon fundraisers in memory of some remarkable people with whom I had the privilege of walking the cancer journey," George explains, "including my mother, dear friends and Wellwood clients. Whenever the run gets tough, I think about their courage and feel inspired to keep going."
"They always carry me."

WELLWOOD PRESENTS ITS 5000TH AFGHAN |
|
Wellwood has now presented its 5000th handmade afghan to someone in this community who is affected by cancer. This is one of the supportive cancer care centre's most popular and successful initiatives. Many visitors and patients of the Juravinski Cancer Centre and Henderson Hospital or clients of Wellwood will recall seeing knitting baskets in various waiting rooms and sitting areas. Individuals contribute a square, a few rows of knitting, or even a stitch or two while they are waiting, receiving treatment, or visiting a friend in hospital. The squares are then knit together by a team of volunteers who create small, large and baby afghans, which brighten up hospital rooms, and bring cheer, warmth and comfort to patients. As of December 5, 2005, Wellwood has now given away 5000 of the familiar and colourful afghans to babies, children, teens and adults. |
